Agriculture in Central Asia provides a brief regional overview of agriculture in the five contiguous states of former Soviet Central Asia — Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan , Turkmenistan , and Uzbekistan. Two other countries that are sometimes classified as Central Asian — Afghanistan and Mongolia — are not included in this overview because of their substantially different background. Agricultural land in Central Asia is mostly desert and mountain pastures. By far the two most significant crops in Central Asia are rice and wheat. Only Kazakhstan does not cultivate significant amounts of cotton. Central Asia is largely desert, and cotton production strongly relies on irrigation.

Spaceport America is no longer just a shiny shell of hope that space tourism would one day launch from this remote spot in the New Mexico desert. The once-empty hangar that anchors the taxpayer-financed launch and landing facility has been transformed into a custom-tailored headquarters where Virgin Galactic will run its commercial flight operations. The interior spaces unveiled Thursday aim to connect paying customers with every aspect of the operation, providing views of the hangar and the space vehicles as well as the banks of monitors inside mission control. Two levels within the spaceport include mission control, a preparation area for pilots and a lounge for customers and their friends and families, with each element of the fit and finish paying homage to either the desert landscape that surrounds the futuristic outpost or the promise of traveling to the edge of space. From hotel rooms to aircraft cabins, the Virgin brand touts its designs for their focus on the customer experience. Spaceport is no different.
Central Asia , central region of Asia, extending from the Caspian Sea in the west to the border of western China in the east. It is bounded on the north by Russia and on the south by Iran , Afghanistan , and China. The region consists of the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan , Uzbekistan , Tajikistan , Kyrgyzstan , and Turkmenistan. About 60 percent of the region consists of desert land, the principal deserts being the Karakum , occupying most of Turkmenistan, and the Kyzylkum , covering much of western Uzbekistan. Most of the desert areas are unsuitable for agricultural use except along the margins of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river systems, which wind their way northwestward through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and eastern Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan after rising in mountain ranges to the south and east.
I was initially apprehensive about joining an eight-day tour with more than other sightseers to Uzbekistan, my first visit to Central Asia. I was a package tour virgin before this trip and had travelled alone or with one companion at most. Please subscribe or log in to continue reading the full article.
